The royal hangover

Stocks sink around King's birthday holiday

Global stock markets spent this week doing their best impression of a long weekend gone wrong - a big Friday blowout, a rough Monday and a Tuesday spent paying for it. It all started when the Nasdaq posted its biggest fall in over a year. Even US President Trump weighed in, wondering aloud why good news kept making stocks go down. We explain why - it's less mysterious than it sounds.

By Monday, the panic had crossed the Pacific - South Korea's Kospi fell so hard, down more than 8%, that the exchange tripped its circuit breaker and briefly halted trading altogether watch our explainer here. Back home, the ASX slept through all of that thanks to Monday’s King's Birthday public holiday - then woke up to find the bill on the doormat. The ASX 200 dropped sharply on Tuesday stabilising throughout the week.

Just when the week needed a grand finale today confirmation came through SpaceX will become a public company in the biggest IPO of all time. The rocket has officially launched; we’ll need to wait and see if the stock does too.
