Cockroaches & cash
The stock market’s latest unwanted visitor

Cockroaches. They’re not popular and if you find one, you know there's probably more lurking. Rate hikes work the same way, they rarely come alone. And, the US Federal Reserve has just raised rates for the first time since 2023, signalling another before the end of the year.
Trump was not happy, he’s made it clear he wants cuts, not hikes. Back home, we're three hikes into our own infestation, and the market is pricing in a further increase to the RBA cash rate next week.
Economists at Australia’s Big Four banks say there could be even more after that. As with most things in the stock market, it pays to notice the pattern before everyone else does.
To your investing,

The cockroach moves are going global
A government bond yield reflects the price investors are willing to pay for owning government debt. The maturity of these government bonds range from very short term all the way through to 10+ years. In the US, the longest dated Treasury bond is 30 years. While central banks set their respective cash rates, fixed interest market traders and investors materially influence bond yields.
As the chart below shows, longer-term government borrowing costs have been grinding higher across the developed world for two years now, and the climb has steepened through 2026. This yield uplift reflects multiple factors, including sustained increases in budget deficits and higher inflationary expectations.
